The RX 6800 XT launched in November 2020 as AMD’s answer to the RTX 3080. Six years on, the question has changed from “is it fast?” to “is AMD still looking after it?” Short version: yes, with an asterisk on new features. Here’s what that means in practice.

Specs are from AMD’s RX 6800 XT product page. The launch price is from AMD’s October 2020 announcement. Partner cards vary in size and clocks, so check the exact model before you measure your case.
Is AMD still supporting the RX 6800 XT?
Yes. In late 2025, AMD’s Adrenalin 25.10.2 release notes said RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards were moving to “maintenance mode.” That caused a lot of alarm. AMD then published a statement, quoted in full by VideoCardz, saying RX 6000 cards will keep getting game support for new releases, stability and game optimizations, and security and bug fixes.
The change is that RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 now sit on their own driver branch, separate from RX 7000 and RX 9000. AMD told Tom’s Hardware that day-zero game support continues. New features go to the newer cards first.
So keep installing the current Adrenalin driver. The installer picks the right branch for your card.
Does the RX 6800 XT get FSR 4?
Not yet. FSR 4 launched on RX 9000 cards. According to Digital Foundry (May 2026), AMD’s plan brings FSR 4.1 to RX 7000 first and to RX 6000 in 2027.
Until then, the RX 6800 XT uses FSR 3.1 and earlier, plus AMD’s driver-level Radeon Super Resolution. They work, but the newer machine-learning upscalers look cleaner in motion. If upscaling quality matters a lot to you, that’s the strongest argument for a newer card.
Should you buy a used RX 6800 XT?
It can make sense. You get 16GB of VRAM, which matters more each year (see our guide on whether 8GB of VRAM is still enough). But the deal only works if the price is clearly below a new 16GB card.
Before you buy, check these:
- Your power supply. AMD recommends 750W and the reference card needs two 8-pin cables. A 550W budget PSU is the most common mismatch.
- Your case. The reference card is 267 mm long and 2.5 slots thick. Many partner cards are longer.
- The card itself. Ask for a short stress test video or run one in person. Temperatures that climb fast and fans at full speed on a light load point to dried thermal paste. Our thermal paste guide explains what that involves.
- Warranty. Used cards usually have none left. Price that in.
New-card prices have been unusual in 2026. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU price tracker showed most current cards selling above launch price in October 2026, which makes a healthy used card more tempting than it normally would be.
What to buy instead
If you’re buying new, the closest modern options are 16GB mainstream cards. The RX 9060 XT 16GB brings FSR 4 and far lower power draw (Tom’s Hardware review). The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is the NVIDIA equivalent, with DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation.
Our take: if you already own an RX 6800 XT, keep it. Don’t spend money to fix a problem you don’t have yet. Lower one or two settings in the heaviest games and wait for the 2027 FSR update.

Is the RX 6800 XT still good for 1440p?
Yes. It was built as a 1440p and entry 4K card, and its 16GB of VRAM avoids the texture limits 8GB cards hit. Expect to lower settings in the newest heavy games, especially with ray tracing on.
Is AMD ending support for the RX 6800 XT?
No. AMD says RX 6000 cards still get new-game support, game optimizations, and security and bug fixes on a dedicated RDNA 2 driver branch. New features arrive on RX 7000 and RX 9000 first.
Will the RX 6800 XT get FSR 4?
AMD plans FSR 4.1 for RX 6000 in 2027, according to Digital Foundry’s May 2026 report. Until then it uses FSR 3.1 and earlier.
What power supply does the RX 6800 XT need?
AMD recommends at least 750W. The reference card uses two 8-pin PCIe power connectors and is rated at 300W typical board power.
