NVIDIA Overlay Hotkeys: Default Shortcuts and How to Change Them

NVIDIA GeForce Experience Hotkeys: Supercharge Your Gaming in 2024!
Quick answer: Press Alt+Z to open the NVIDIA overlay. Other defaults: Alt+F9 starts or stops recording, Alt+Shift+F10 saves an Instant Replay, Alt+F1 takes a screenshot and Alt+F2 opens Photo Mode. These now live in the NVIDIA App, which replaced GeForce Experience. Change them from the Settings cog in the overlay.

If your old GeForce Experience shortcuts stopped making sense, that’s because GeForce Experience is gone. NVIDIA moved the overlay, recording and screenshots into the NVIDIA App. Most default keys stayed the same.

Default NVIDIA overlay shortcuts

Action Default shortcut
Open or close the overlay Alt+Z
Start or stop recording Alt+F9
Save Instant Replay Alt+Shift+F10
Screenshot Alt+F1
Photo Mode Alt+F2

These are the defaults NVIDIA lists for the NVIDIA App overlay. If you changed them in GeForce Experience, check them again after moving to the NVIDIA App.

How to change a shortcut

  1. Press Alt+Z to open the overlay.
  2. Click the Settings cog.
  3. Open Keyboard Shortcuts.
  4. Click the shortcut you want to change and press the new key combination.

Pick combinations your games don’t use. Alt+F-key combos sometimes clash with game or streaming software shortcuts.

GeForce Experience is gone

NVIDIA released the NVIDIA App on November 12, 2024, and its NVIDIA App FAQ says GeForce Experience is no longer supported. The app combines what GeForce Experience and the NVIDIA Control Panel used to do: drivers, game settings, the overlay and recording. If GeForce Experience is still installed, install the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s site.

Alt+Z not working? Try these

  1. Turn the overlay on. In the NVIDIA App, open Settings and make sure the in-game overlay is enabled. If it’s off, Alt+Z does nothing.
  2. Check for a clash. GeForce NOW and other apps can use Alt+Z. NVIDIA’s own advice for the GeForce NOW clash is to reassign one of them, for example to Ctrl+Alt+Z.
  3. Update your driver and the app. Both update from the NVIDIA App’s Drivers tab.
  4. Close other overlays. Discord, Steam and Xbox Game Bar overlays can grab the same keys.
  5. Restart the app. If the overlay still won’t open, restart the PC. It’s dull, but it works more often than it should.
