How It Runs Games in 4K

The RTX 4090 is impressive at 4K gaming. Here’s why:

4K Performance

We don’t have our own 4K frame rates for these systems, so we’ve left out a benchmark table. Results also depend on the CPU, RAM and cooling each builder uses.

What Makes It Great

  • 4K Gaming: The strongest 4K card of its generation
  • Better Lighting: Makes games look more real
  • DLSS Help: Makes games run much faster
  • 8K Ready: Can even handle some games at 8K

RTX 4090 vs. RTX 4080: What’s Different

Speed Difference

  • More cores: 16,384 vs 9,728 CUDA cores
  • Has more memory: 24GB vs. 16GB
  • Uses more power: 450W .vs 320W

Price and Value

  • RTX 4090: $1,599 – $2,000
  • RTX 4080: $1,199
  • The 4090 is worth it if you want the very best

How to Build a Great RTX 4090 PC

Ultimate Guide to RTX 4090 Gaming PC: Best Builds & Performance in 2025

Parts You Need

  1. Power Supply
    • Need at least 850W
    • 1000W is better if you want to push it harder
    • Get a good quality one with a Gold or Platinum rating
  2. Cooling
    • Water cooling works best
    • Need a case with good airflow
    • Use many fans to keep things cool
  3. Motherboard Needs
    • Must have PCIe 4.0
    • Good power delivery
    • Quality parts for stable power

Best Cases to Use

  • Lian Li O11 Dynamic
  • Phanteks Enthoo 719
  • Corsair 7000D Airflow

Great for Work Too

The RTX 4090 isn’t just for games:

  • 3D Work: Very fast in Blender and Maya
  • Video Editing: Makes Adobe Premiere Pro run faster
  • AI Work: Great at handling AI tasks
  • VR: Makes VR games run super smooth

RTX 4090 build checklist: CPU, board, RAM, PSU, case, cooling

This section pulls together what used to be separate guides on this site. Same card, same questions.

RTX 4090 spec Value
CUDA cores 16,384
Memory 24GB GDDR6X, 384-bit
Total graphics power 450W
NVIDIA’s recommended PSU 850W
Power connector 16-pin 12VHPWR (adapter in the box)
Display outputs HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a

CPU

At 4K the 4090 does most of the work. At 1440p and 1080p it’s often waiting on the CPU, so a slower chip leaves performance on the table. If you’re spending this much on a GPU, pair it with a current high-end gaming CPU.

Motherboard

The 4090 is a PCIe 4.0 x16 card. It works on PCIe 3.0 boards with a small performance loss, and a PCIe 5.0 slot doesn’t make it faster. Put it in the top x16 slot. Watch out on smaller boards: a 3.5 or 4-slot card can cover M.2 slots and front headers.

RAM

32GB is the sensible amount for a gaming build. Enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS, or your RAM runs at its slow default speed. Go to 64GB only if you edit video or run big local AI models.

Power supply and the 16-pin connector

Use a quality 850W or larger unit. If it has a native 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 cable, use that. If not, use the adapter with a separate PCIe cable to each 8-pin plug. Push the 16-pin connector in until it’s fully seated, and don’t bend the cable sharply right at the plug. A partly seated connector is the usual cause of melted plugs.

Case

The Founders Edition is about 304mm long and three slots thick. Many partner cards are longer, around 330mm to 360mm, and some are close to four slots. Check the case’s GPU clearance against the exact card, and leave room for the power cable to come out without a tight bend. A support bracket stops the card sagging.

Air vs water cooling, and noise

Most 4090s come with very large air coolers, and those are enough for most people. A water block or a hybrid card can lower temperatures and noise, but it costs more and adds work. The cheaper way to a quieter card is to lower its power limit in MSI Afterburner. The 4090 loses little performance from a moderate power cut, though how much depends on the game. Check your own games before and after.

Monitor

For 4K at 144Hz, use HDMI 2.1, or DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC. Check that the monitor supports one of them. A cheap or old cable is a common cause of black screens and flicker at high refresh rates.

RTX 4090 vs RTX 3090 Ti

Both have 24GB, and both are rated at 450W. The 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores against the 3090 Ti’s 10,752, and it adds DLSS 3 frame generation. It’s a big generational jump. For gaming, a used 3090 Ti only makes sense if it’s much cheaper.

Final Thoughts

The Nvidia RTX 4090 PC is the best you can get in 2025 gaming. It’s perfect if you want to play games in 4K, create content, or have a PC that will last for years. It has new DLSS 3 technology, great lighting effects, and lots of memory. Yes, it costs more, but it’s worth it if you want the best.

Think about what you need and how much you want to spend. You can buy a pre-built PC or build your own. Just make sure it has good cooling and power. An RTX 4090 PC will give you great gaming and work performance for years.
