Why Is Call of Duty SM2 Shutting Down? Answered

Do you want to know why Call of Duty SM2 is shutting down? Call of Duty SM2 was a free-play project designed by a group of developers. They tried to gather the best Call of Duty maps, guns, weapons, tricks, and more into one place. But Activision has taken legal actions against them, and now SM2 is no more. This article will explain why Call of Duty SM2 is shutting down.

What is Call of Duty SM2?

Established in 2021, SM2 consists of a young developer team aiming to provide players with the best Call of Duty experience. They have bought together the best Call of Duty weapons, maps, perks, killstreaks, game modes, camos, and more into a single platform that runs on the Modern Warfare 2 engine. And the best part is, they were planning to give it for free. However, SM2 didn’t announce a release date, but now we know that day will never come.

In January 2023, they released a video showcasing all the weapons in the game. This trailer was an instant hit among Call of Duty lovers. Later in April, they Tweeted, saying, “We have decided to move from IW4 (the original Modern Warfare 2 engine) to H1 (Modern Warfare Remastered engine), mainly for technical reasons.”

The reason behind Call of Duty SM2 Shutting Down

On 17th May 2023, the official SM2 Twitter page released a statement saying they had received a Cease and Desist letter from Activision Publishing. However, the Tweet didn’t mention a particular reason for this legal action. Furthermore, neither Activision took a step towards releasing a statement explaining their decision.

SM2 further Tweeted, “We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations permanently. Thank you all for your support over the past two years.” Fans are devastated by this news. Some are raising their eyebrows and questioning the reason for getting a court order to cease operations after two years. They accused Activision of not taking legal action after learning about SM2. And some are pointing out that switching into Modern Warfare Engine recently and getting a lawsuit may have a connection. However, still, we are unaware of the truth behind the law charges.

The termination of the project began immediately after receiving the lawsuit. SM2 removed its official website and redirected the link to its Twitter page. There they left a thank note for everyone who helped them.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
