Cid has come a long way from Final Fantasy 2. He first appeared as Fynn’s Knights in 1988, but in Final Fantasy 2, he was just a transportation provider, and now he’s the primary source behind the main character’s powers.
Cid is called the Warden of Thunder. This means he can control lightning and help his friends escape trouble. He used this tactic to become a close ally of Clive. So Clive and Cid unite to destroy the Mother Crystals because they believe eliminating them will free humanity from its societal shackles.
Once they destroy the Crystals, a dark portal opens, and the Eikon Typhon wounds Cid. Instead of recovering, Cid his remaining energy to weaken Typhon because it tries to capture Clive. This selfless act of Cid costs him his life. He gives the Essence of Ramuh to Clive before he perishes.
The death of Cid fast-forwards the game five years into the future. Clive is seen fulfilling Cid’s dream on behalf of him. Using The powers that Cid gave to him before his death, Clive strives to destroy the remaining crystals and recruit Bearers. So Cid becomes the Main protagonist for most of the game. He’s also supposedly 34 years old.
